The car just out of nowhere stopped going in reverse. The reverse gear did not engage and the car rolled forward unexpectedly striking the car in front of me. With the zf transmission on the 2000 3 series, the reverse drum is made of aluminum and very easy to crack, each time it cracks, you are not able to engage the car in reverse at all. My car has approximately 155,000 miles. I'm not an expert by any means but I have done my fair share of research into these cars in repairing mine. I took my car to the dealership because I was unable to reverse. The problem occurred with no warning, as the car has been properly maintained and has operated perfectly until today. No warning light came on.
The dealership confirmed that the transmission needed replacement. Needs brakes and maybe shocks and struts, but is a strong, fun runner even with 220k. While driving 2 mph, the vehicle would not move when shifted into reverse only moving forward. I drove it to the shop and they look at it and said I need a new transmission.
